Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Classes in Dubai Sports City
Never done yoga, or coming back after a long break? Here is what your first class at Thousand Petaled Lotus in Dubai Sports City looks like, and how to start without feeling overwhelmed.

If you are new to yoga, the best first step is a small, beginner-friendly class with a teacher who can see you and adjust the class to you. You don’t need to be flexible, fit or experienced. You just need to turn up, breathe and go at your own pace.
At Thousand Petaled Lotus in Dubai Sports City, many of our students arrive with exactly the same worries: “I can’t touch my toes”, “everyone else will know what they’re doing”, “what if I can’t keep up?” This guide answers those questions, so your first class feels easy rather than intimidating.
Do I need to be flexible to start yoga?
No. Flexibility is something yoga builds, not something you need before you begin. Our teachers offer simpler versions of every pose, and props such as blocks and straps make poses comfortable for every body. Most beginners notice they move more easily within a few weeks of regular practice.
Which yoga style should a beginner choose?
Start with a class that moves at a steady pace and explains each pose.
| Style | What it feels like | Good for beginners? |
|---|---|---|
| Hatha | Slower pace, poses held for a few breaths, clear instructions | Yes, the best place to start |
| Gentle / all levels | Easy pace, extra rest, lots of options | Yes, ideal if you feel stiff or are returning after a break |
| Vinyasa | Poses linked with the breath in a flowing sequence | After a few classes |
| Power Yoga | Strong, faster and more physical | Once you know the basic poses |
Not sure which to pick? WhatsApp us and tell us how you feel, and we’ll suggest a class from the timetable.
What happens in your first class
A typical class lasts about an hour and follows a simple shape:
- Arrive and settle. A few minutes of breathing to slow down after the day.
- Warm up. Gentle movements for the spine, hips and shoulders.
- Standing and balancing poses. These build strength and steadiness, always with easier options.
- Floor poses. Stretches and twists to release tension.
- Relaxation. A few quiet minutes lying down at the end. Many students say this is their favourite part.
Your teacher will demonstrate, explain where to place your hands and feet, and remind you that you can rest at any time.
What to bring and wear
- Comfortable clothes you can move and stretch in
- A bottle of water and a small towel
- Your own mat if you have one. If not, no worries either provide one
- An empty-ish stomach: eat a light meal 2 hours before class
Please arrive about 10 minutes early for your first class, so we can welcome you, ask about any injuries, and help you settle in.
Tell your teacher about injuries
If you have back pain, knee problems, high blood pressure, or you’re pregnant, let your teacher know before class. Yoga can be adapted for most conditions. If you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting.
How often should a beginner practise?
Two or three classes a week is a lovely rhythm. Consistency matters more than intensity: a few gentle classes every week will do more for you than one hard class a month. Read our tips on how to build a yoga habit that lasts.
